This indicator refers to the projected population estimate of persons aged 65 years and over. The Census 2022 ‘usually resident’ population (5,183,966 persons) provides the base for the population projections.
In order to assist the user in assessing the impact of different levels of population change, three population projection variants were produced. These national population projections provide statistics on potential future population levels and is not an attempt to predict the future but rather presents how the population could evolve under different scenarios. For the purpose of this information hub, the moderate net migration M2 scenario has been selected, where annual net migration starts at +75,000 persons in 2022 and decreases incrementally to +30,000 persons per annum by 2032 and remains at this level to 2057.
