Most sectors contributed positively to growth with the largest contributions in the Industry (excluding Construction) and Information & Communication sectors. On the Expenditure side of the accounts, Total Exports recorded growth of 7.5% in 2025 while Total Imports increased by 9.6%. The result is an increase in net exports of €5.2bn in 2025 over 2024 or 2.2%.
Headline investment rose by 31.5% in 2025, the Capital Formation element of which increased by 38.4%. This is predominantly due to an increase in investment in Research & Development. Transactions in Research & Development are largely GDP neutral because of an offsetting decrease in imports. For more information see Chapter 8, GDP by Expenditures and Chapter 11, Investment.
Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE), a measure of consumer spending on goods and services, increased by 2.6% in 2025, with the largest growth seen in spending on Accommodation Services (+24.7%), Inpatient Care Services (+16.1%) along with Household Appliances (+13.6%). Declines in expenditure included Insurance (-17.1%), Tobacco (-6.2%) and Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (-5.8%). For more information, see Personal Spending.
For government consumption, Net Expenditure by Central & Local Government on Current Goods & Services rose by 3.2% in 2025.
