The Midland region (Laois, Longford, Offaly, and Westmeath) is the second smallest agricultural producing region, generating 11% of the State’s Agricultural Output at Basic Prices. It has the second highest dependency on Cattle, the source of 36% of its output value, and the highest dependency on Pigs, which accounted for a further 9% of output. Milk was responsible for another 29% of the value of the region’s output while Crops generated 16% of output.
The region’s Agricultural Output at Basic Prices grew by 12% (+€163m) to €1.5bn. Cattle were responsible for €147m of this increase, with their value rising by 37% to €539m. The contribution of Pigs to the region’s output dropped by 5% (-€7m) while Horse values grew by 23% (+€7m). The value of its Milk went up by 7% (+€29m) to €428m. Crop output contracted by 4% (-€9m) to €234m, with Cereals accounting for €2m of this decrease.
Intermediate Consumption costs increased by 3% (+€23m) to €827m. Expenditure on Fertilisers rose by €11m to €61m while the cost of Feeding Stuffs was up by 4% (+€10m) to €248m. The cost of Maintenance & Repairs grew by 10% (+€7m) to €74m while expenditure on Other Goods & Services increased by 11% (+€7m) to €73m. Payments received for Other Subsidies less Taxes on Production increased by 4% (+€7m) to €174m. The region had the highest rate of increase in both Operating Surplus and Entrepreneurial Income, with its Operating Surplus up by 61% (+€230m) to €609m while Entrepreneurial Income was 80% (+€246m) higher at €555m (See Table 1.1 and PxStat Table ACA03).
