The Border region (Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, and Sligo) had the second highest dependency on Livestock for its agricultural income, although Cattle accounted for just 29% of the total value of its output. It produced 23% of Irish Pigs, 67% of Irish Poultry, and 26% of Irish Sheep. Milk accounted for 19% of the region’s output.
The value of its Agricultural Output at Basic Prices grew by 11% (+€175m) to €1.8bn. It experienced the second largest rate of increase in Cattle values, which were up by 38% (+€143m) to €524m, while the value of its Pig production fell by 8% (-€14m) to €157m. Poultry values grew by 9% (+€15m) while Milk contributed an additional €16m (+5%) to the value of its outputs. Crops accounted for 17% of the value of the region’s output and their value was down 2% (-€6m) to €309m.
Intermediate Consumption costs grew by 4% (+€37m) to €1.1bn. Maintenance & Repairs and Fertilisers were the two biggest contributors to this increase, with the cost of the former rising 14% (+€12m) to €94m and the latter increasing by 22% (+€11m) to €61m. The region experienced the highest rate of increase in expenditure on Energy & Lubricants, which rose by 8% (+€6m) to €81m. Payments received for Other Subsidies less Taxes on Production fell by 3% (-€12m) to €340m. The Border also had the second lowest growth rate in Operating Surplus, which rose by 13% (+€78m) to €692m. When lower Net Interest and Land Rental costs are accounted for, its Entrepreneurial Income rose by 17% (+€90m) to €630m (See Table 1.1 and PxStat Table ACA03).
