Road Traffic Volumes

COVID-19 Release Information

This publication has been compiled during the COVID-19 crisis. The results contained in this publication reflect some of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 situation.

Road traffic volumes

Road traffic volumes have been impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. In 2020, Irish licensed vehicles travelled a total of 36.2 billion kilometres, compared with 47.1 billion kilometres in 2019.
Each vehicle travelled, on average, 12,723 kilometres in 2020, a decrease of 24.6% compared with 2019.
Private cars accounted for over 77.0% of the total number of licensed vehicles and 72.0% of the total distance travelled in 2020. On average, each private car travelled 11,803 kilometres in 2020, a decrease of 27.8% compared with 2019.

Note: The data are estimates created by combining different data sources. Differential traffic patterns caused by COVID-19 may have affected the assumptions from which estimations for this time period are derived. For more information on the methodology see: Appendix
