The MNE dominated sectors of the economy contracted by 7.5% in the first quarter of 2026. The Industry (excluding Construction) sector fell by 12.0% in the quarter, while the Information & Communication sector fell by 2.0% in the quarter. Overall, the non-MNE sectors increased by 0.1% in the quarter. The Professional, Administrative & Support sector grew by 1.0% while the Real Estate Activities sector was largely flat. All other sectors posted contractions including Arts & Entertainment (-6.2%) and Construction (-4.3%).

Estimates for the first quarter of 2026 indicate that there was a decrease of 13.0% in GDP in real terms in Q1 2026 compared with Q1 2025. Gross Value Added (GVA) for the MNE-dominated sectors contracted by 24.8% in Q1 2026 compared with Q1 2025. The Industry (excluding Construction) sector decreased by 36.0% in Q1 compared with the equivalent quarter of 2025 while the Information and Communication sector rose by 3.7% year-on-year over the same period.
Of the domestic based economic sectors, the Financial & Insurance sector increased by 5.1% in Q1 2026 compared with Q1 2025 while the Real Estate activities sector grew by 3.8% over the same period. Growth was also recorded in Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants which rose by 1.3% and Public Administration, Education & Health which increased by 1.1%. Contractions were seen in Arts & Entertainment (-5.3%), Construction (-3.5%), Professional & Administrative Services (-2.4%), and Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing (-0.1%).
Overall, the domestic based sectors grew by 1.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026 compared with Q1 2025. (See Tables 2.3 and 6.2).
