The MNE dominated sectors of the economy contracted by 27.1% in the first quarter of 2026. The Industry (excluding Construction) sector fell by 35.0% in the quarter, while the Information & Communication sector fell by 2.0% in the quarter. Overall, the non-MNE sectors increased by 0.4% in the quarter. Professional & Administrative Services rose by 1.5% in the quarter while Construction increased by 1.2% over the same period. More modest growth was recorded in the Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants sector which posted an increase of 0.2%. The domestic facing sectors which posted declines were Financial & Insurance (-5.6%), Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing (-5.3%), Arts & Entertainment (-4.4%), Real Estate activities (-0.3%) and Public Administration, Education & Health (-0.1%).

Estimates for the first quarter of 2026 indicate that there was a decrease of 17.1% in GDP in real terms in Q1 2026 compared with Q1 2025. Gross Value Added (GVA) for the MNE-dominated sectors contracted by 28.5% in Q1 2026 compared with Q1 2025. The Industry (excluding Construction) sector decreased by 38.2% in Q1 compared with the equivalent quarter of 2025 while the Information and Communication sector rose by 3.2% year-on-year over the same period.
Of the domestic based economic sectors, the Financial & Insurance sector increased by 4.2% in Q1 2026 compared with Q1 2025 while the Real Estate activities sector grew by 3.7% over the same period. Growth was also recorded in Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants which rose by 3.3%. Contractions were seen in Arts & Entertainment (-5.6%), Professional & Administrative Services (-2.2%), Public Administration, Education & Health (-1.3%) and Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing (-0.3%).
Overall, the domestic based sectors grew by 1.4% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026 compared with Q1 2025. (See Tables 2.3 and 6.2).
