The estimates in this publication use more complete data than were available for the Q4 2022 estimates published in March 2023 and updates include weaker results for the Industry sector, Information & Communication, Construction, Financial & Insurance Activities and the Arts & Entertainment sector but partially offset by stronger results in Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing, Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants and Public Administration, Education & Health.
These results are compiled in accordance with the latest EU standard framework, ESA 2010. For more information on our main national accounts aggregates, including data per head of population and per person in employment, see Table 1.2 Main Aggregates.

Please note: Figure 1.4 was updated subsequent to publication to correct the representation of the Net Exports bar in the graph for reference year 2022. The underlying data however are unrevised.
On the Expenditure side of the accounts, exports remained strong in 2022 with growth of 13.9% recorded. Imports increased by 15.9% largely due to higher imports of Merchandise Goods and Royalties. The result is an increase in net exports of more than €16.2bn in 2022 over 2021 or 9.3%.
Headline investment rose by just over 9% in 2022. This is predominantly due to an increase in investment in Other Machinery & Equipment, Transport Equipment and Dwellings. Transactions in Other Machinery & Equipment and Transport Equipment are largely GDP neutral because of an offsetting decrease in imports. For more information see Chapter 8, GDP by Expenditures and Chapter 11, Investment.
Investment in Dwellings increased in 2022, from €7.8bn in 2021 to €9.5bn, while investment in Other Machinery & Equipment increased from €6.1bn in 2021 to €10.5bn in 2022. This reflects a continuing trend in return to office by workers post COVID-19 along with investment in plant and machinery and datacentres by MNE’s. For more information see Investment.
Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE), a measure of consumer spending on goods and services, increased by 9.4% in 2022, with the largest growth seen in spending in Restaurants & Hotels (+26.8%), Recreation & Culture (+26.1%) along with Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (+16.5%). This publication includes personal consumption data with product detail, see Personal Spending.
For government consumption, Net Expenditure by Central & Local Government on Current Goods & Services rose by 3.5% in 2022 when compared to 2021, a smaller increase compared with years 2020 and 2021 that had been elevated due to spending during the COVID-19 pandemic.
