Supplementary Information Notice - Business Demography

Please note that the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is not evident in the figures presented in this chapter. This is because an enterprise is considered to be active in a year if it generates turnover, employs staff, or makes investments in that period. As businesses were operating normally during the first three months of 2020, some businesses that may have subsequently ceased trading due to the pandemic, were still considered active in 2020. In addition, the employee count for 2020 is the average employment figure over the year, based on the monthly returns from Revenue for each individual enterprise. Please see the Business Demography 2020 release for further information.

There were a number of changes to the 2019 Business Demography process, which caused a break in series to previous years. This means direct comparisons between 2019 and previous figures are not truly reflective of the underlying changes. Please see the Business Demography 2019 release for further information.

CSO Business Demography data monitors the number of enterprise births (new enterprises created) and deaths (enterprises that ceased trading) in the business economy. Births and deaths due to mergers, takeovers, break-ups, change of activity or the restructuring of a set of enterprises are all excluded from the data.

This chapter presents this information at sectoral level as well as for the total business economy. It is also possible to track new enterprise births to gain a better understanding of the types of business that are more likely to survive the early years of their life cycle1.

1See Appendix 2 for full definitions of enterprise births and deaths.
