Births, Deaths and Marriages in Quarter 1 2011

 

The CSO today released the Vital Statistics First Quarter 2011 report.

Some of the key points highlighted in the report are as follows:


Births

  • There were 19,950 births registered in the first quarter of 2011, an increase of 7.6% in the number of births registered in the corresponding quarter of 2010. This is the highest number of births registered in a quarter since the series began in 1960.
  • Births in the first quarter of 2011 represented an annual birth rate of 17.8 per 1,000 population. The rate for the corresponding quarter of 2010 was 16.6 per 1,000 population and 15.6 per 1,000 population in quarter 1 2002. In quarter 1 2011, Fingal recorded the highest birth rate of 25.3 per 1,000 population, while South Tipperary recorded the lowest birth rate of 12.6 per 1,000 population.
  • Of the 19,950 births, there were 6,768 births registered as outside marriage. This accounted for 34% of all births. Of these, 3,622 births were to unmarried parents with the same address, 18.2% of all births. The highest percentage of births outside marriage occurred in Limerick City at 52%, while the lowest percentage occurred in Leitrim at 21%.

Deaths

  • There were 7,651 deaths registered in quarter 1 2011, an increase of 1.2% in the number of deaths registered in the first quarter of 2010. The quarter 1 2011 total represents a death rate of 6.8 per 1,000 population, the same rate recorded in the corresponding quarter in 2010. The death rate in quarter 1 2002 was 8.1 per 1,000 population.
  • In quarter 1 2011, there was more than twice as many male deaths registered (11) compared with the number of females deaths registered (5) in the 05-14 age category. In both the 15-24 and the 25-34 year age categories, there were 3.5 male deaths for every 1 female death registered. Disparities in gender are seen to a lesser extent throughout other age categories.
  • For those aged 65 and over, the annual death rate was 47.8 per 1,000 population (6,089 deaths). This compares with a rate of 48.9 per 1,000 population for the corresponding quarter of 2010, a decline of 2.2%. The decrease in this rate since 2002 was 18.3% (58.5 per 1,000 population).
  • There were 67 infant deaths registered in quarter 1 2011 giving an infant mortality rate of 3.4 deaths per 1,000 live births. The corresponding rate in quarter 1 2010 was 3.2 per 1,000 live births and was 4.9 per 1,000 live births in quarter 1 2002. The number of neonatal deaths (deaths of infants at ages under 4 weeks) in quarter 1 2011 was 58, 2.9 deaths per 1,000 live births.
  • Over one third (34%) of all deaths in the quarter were attributed to circulatory disease (2,612), while 28% were attributed to malignant neoplasms (2,143), 13% to respiratory diseases (1,026) and 5% to external causes (358).

Natural Increase

  • The natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) for quarter 1 2011 was 12,299. This represents a rate of 11.0 per 1,000 population, 1.2 above quarter 1 2010 and 3.5 above quarter 1 2002.


Marriages

  • There were 3,052 marriages registered in quarter 1 2011, 329 less than the corresponding quarter of 2010 and an increase of 568 from the number of marriages registered in quarter 1 2002.
