This release relies on data collated by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) from Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and supplied by the Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI) Policy Division within the Department of Transport. TII collates data from CPOs who have set up an Application Programme Interface (API) that provides free and unrestricted access to their publicly-accessible EV recharging infrastructure data, as mandated under the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) (2023/1804). While the coverage of publicly-accessible recharging locations is comprehensive and captures the majority of the larger CPOs, there were several operators, particularly smaller operators, who, as of December 2025, had not yet set up an API. Subsequent coverage of the data is expected to improve over the course of 2026, and the methods used to generate it will be further developed and enhanced. The CSO will revisit the data annually and update accordingly.
At the end of 2025, the Electric Vehicle (EV) public charging infrastructure in Ireland was made up of 1,125 different charging locations with 3,416 Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSEs) or charging points. This included 1,883 fast charging points and 3,662 connectors (used to connect the electric vehicle to the charger) at these locations.
Over 8 in 10 (82%) of the charging locations (920) were located in urban areas in December 2025, where 76% of the charging points (2,592), 75% of the fast chargers (1,415), and 76% of the connectors (2,769) were also located.
Fast chargers (AC recharging points with an output greater than 22kW and DC points with an output greater than or equal to 50kW) accounted for 1,883 points or 55% of the charging points (or EVSEs). Fast chargers reduce charging times and have the capacity to charge to 80% of battery storage in about 20-30 minutes, compared with several hours for a regular (slow and medium speed) public AC-DC charger.
There was one charging point (fast, medium or slow chargers) available for every 30 EVs and one fast charging point for every 54 EVs in Ireland as of December 2025.
At EU level (EU-27), 19% of the public chargers were fast chargers in May 2026, with Latvia having the highest percentage (59%) and the Netherlands and Malta having the lowest (4%). In Ireland, 55% of chargers are fast chargers as of December 2025.
Looking at the EU-27 data as of May 2026, the EU average was one charging point for every seven EVs. The Netherlands reported the lowest number with three EVs per one charger and Malta had the highest number at 91 EVs per one charger.
For fast chargers, the EU-27 average was one fast charger for every 37 EVs, with Latvia reporting the lowest number with nine EVs per one fast charger and Malta the highest at 2,595 EVs.
This release uses data from Eurostat and Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), the Department of Transport’s dedicated office for zero-emission transition, to look at Ireland’s public EV charging infrastructure.
It provides an overview of the national charging network that supports the shift toward cleaner transport. The National Road Network EV Charging Plan 2024-2030 and the EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) outlines the infrastructure that will be rolled out to serve the country’s growing demand for EVs.
At the end of December 2025, the public charging infrastructure for EVs in Ireland consisted of 1,125 charging locations, 3,416 EVSEs or charging points, and 3,662 connectors. The number of fast charging points was 1,883, which was 55% of the total.
The ratio of EVs to charging points in Ireland is 30:1, that is, one charging point (including all slow, medium and fast chargers) for every 30 electric vehicles. The ratio of electric vehicles to fast charging points is 54:1 (one fast charging point for every 54 electric vehicles).
Looking at the EU-27 countries in May 2026, 19% of the 1,169,771 public charging points were fast charging points (220,760). Eight countries had a percentage lower than the EU-27 average (Slovenia, Sweden, Greece, Luxembourg, Belgium, Cyprus, the Netherlands, and Malta). Latvia has the highest percentage of fast charging points (59%), while the Netherlands and Malta had the lowest percentage at 4%. Ireland ranked in second position with 55% of charging points being fast charging points.
In the EU-27, on average there were seven EVs (7:1) for every charging point. The Netherlands had the lowest ratio at 3:1 (one charging point for every three EVs) and Malta had the highest ratio at 91:1 (one charging point for every 91 EVs).
The ratio of EVs to fast charging point in the EU-27 was 37:1, meaning there was one fast charging point for every 37 EVs.
Fourteen countries had a lower ratio than that of the EU-27, with Latvia having the lowest at 9:1 (one fast charging point for every 9 electric vehicles). Malta had the highest ratio 2,595:1 (one fast charging point for every 2,595 electric vehicles) (See Table 1 and 2).
At the end of 2025, 82% of the charging locations (920) in Ireland were in urban areas, where 76% of EVSEs or charging points (2,592), 75% of fast charging points (1,415), and 76% of the connectors (2,769) were also located.
In rural areas, there were 205 charging locations, with 824 charging points (EVSEs), 468 fast chargers, and 893 connectors (See Table 2).
Charging infrastructure locations were classified as urban or rural using spatial mapping tools. Location coordinates were matched against official 2022 National Statistical Boundaries. Any charging location falling outside a designated urban area boundary was classified as rural.
Co. Dublin and Co. Cork together accounted for 30% (332) of the national charging locations, with 34% (1,152) of the total charging points (EVSEs) and 34% (636) of the total fast charging points.
In December 2025, the three counties with the lowest number of charging locations were Co. Leitrim with five charging locations and Co. Monahan and Co. Longford with 16 charging locations each.
The three counties with the lowest number of charging points (EVSEs) were Co. Leitrim with eleven, Co. Longford with 36 and Co. Monaghan with 39 charging points respectively.
The three counties with the lowest number of fast chargers were Co. Leitrim with seven, and Co. Monaghan and Co. Sligo with 22 each. (See Table 3)

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (28 August 2026) published the Public Charging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles in Ireland.
Commenting on the data, Damien Lenihan, Statistician in the Transport Section of the CSO, said:
"Today’s figures provide insight into the evolution of the public electric charging network as required by the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 and the National Road Network EV Charging Plan 2024-2030.
According to European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) publicly charging locations are sites or premises accessible to the general public, regardless of their location on public or private property. This includes charging locations on private property with restricted access to certain groups, such as customers (for instance, supermarkets and commercial parking lots). Conversely, access to non-public locations is strictly restricted to an exclusive group of users, such as residential charging, workplaces. and industrial and depot charging locations.
