In 2019, 62.2% of properties were purchased jointly 

Note - data released under the Residential Property Price Index series should be quoted as the official source of high level volume and median price transaction statistics.

The number of dwellings purchased rose from 19,300 in 2010 to 45,280 by 2019.

Joint transactions took up a larger share of the residential property market in 2019 compared with 2010.

The proportion of properties purchased jointly rose from 47.0% in 2010 to 62.2% in 2019, an increase of 15.2 percentage points. 

From 2016 onwards, it is possible to provide data on the number of purchasers with and without children.

The majority of purchasers did not have children in 2019.

  • 33.8% were a sole purchaser without child/children
  • 31.8% were a joint purchaser without child/children
  • 30.4% were a joint purchaser with child/children
  • 4.0% were a sole purchaser with child/children

South Dublin had the largest share of joint transactions in 2019 at 75.8%

South Dublin had the largest share in 2019 of joint transactions in volume terms, with 75.8% (2,260) of purchases by a joint purchaser. The joint share was smallest in Longford at 48.6%, (or 170 transactions).

Joint purchaser with a child/children purchase most expensive properties in 2019

In 2019, the median price of a residential dwelling was €259,000, with a large variation by type of purchaser.

The median prices in 2019 were:

  • €295,000 -   joint purchaser with child/children
  • €285,000 -   joint purchaser without child/children
  • €205,000 -   sole purchaser with children
  • €205,000 -   sole purchaser without child/children

Largest median prices found in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and surronding regions

The highest median prices for sole purchasers were in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (€430,000), Dublin City (€325,000), Fingal (€295,000) and South Dublin (€290,000). These areas also had the highest median prices for joint purchasers at €565,000 in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, €390,000 in Dublin City, €365,000 in Fingal and €357,000 in Wicklow.

Leitrim had the lowest median price for sole purchasers at €90,400 in 2019 and also for joint purchasers at €130,000.

The largest difference between sole and joint prices was €135,000 in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, while the smallest was just €26,000 in Laois.
