Median age of purchasers stands at 38 in 2019

The median age of purchasers rose from 35 to 38 years between 2010 and 2019, across all transactions. For sole purchasers, the median age rose eight years, from 2010 to 2019, while the median for joint purchasers increased by three years, from 2010 to 2019.

The median age by different types of purchaser in 2019 were:

  • 42 for sole purchaser with child/children
  • 42 for sole purchaser without children
  • 38 for joint purchaser with child/children
  • 36 for joint purchaser without children

Youngest sole purchasers in Dublin City and South Dublin for joint purchasers

The highest median age for sole purchasers was 50 in Kerry in 2019, while the lowest was 38 in Dublin City. For joint purchasers, the highest median age was 44 in Kerry with the lowest at 35 in South Dublin.

Seven out of ten who bought a dwelling in 2019 aged between 25 and 44

Seven in ten people who bought a dwelling in 2019 were aged between 25 and 44. Only 6.6% of purchasers were aged over 65 in 2019.
