Fuel excise clearances

The Revenue Commissioners collect statistics on the volumes of fuel clearances covered by excise taxes. Clearances reflect the excise duties paid on oil removed from tax warehouses. Clearances data provide a proxy for sales and the associated level of consumption but do not reflect actual consumption per se. 

Clearances of autodiesel in September 2021 were 4% higher than in September 2020 and 1% higher than in September 2019.

There was an increase of 3% for clearances of petrol in September 2021 compared with the levels in September 2020. September 2021 petrol clearance volumes were 8% below September 2019. See table 2.1 and figure 2.1.

In October 2021, 3,882 new private cars were licensed in Ireland, compared with 4,189 in October 2020, a decrease of 7.3%. This compares with 3,214 new private cars licensed in October 2019.

In addition, the number of used (imported) private cars licensed fell from 9,543 in October 2020 to 4,506 in October 2021. This compares with 10,941 used (imported) private cars licensed in October 2019. See table 2.2 and figure 2.2.

Road Fatalities

There were 115 fatalities on Irish roads in the first ten months of 2021 compared with 127 in the same period in 2020, a decrease of 9.4%. In October 2021, there were 10 fatalities on Irish roads compared with 13 in October 2020. See table 2.3.
