Data for Ireland

Previously published information can be seen in the previous CSO publication for SDG 9.1.1.

The CSO's publication Measuring Distance to Everyday Services in Ireland gives details of the distances people are from main roads and secondary roads; banks and post offices; as well as other everyday services.

Map 4.1 is based on Census 2022 data. It shows the average distance in kilometres (km) of residential dwellings to the primary road network access point. Residential dwellings in counties Waterford, Offaly, Cavan, Donegal and Leitrim are on average, more than 6km from a primary road network access point.

Transport Hub - CSO

The CSO Transport Statistics Hub has been developed by the CSO to serve as a one-stop shop for Transport data in Ireland.

The purpose of the Hub is to collate transport statistics from CSO and other public sector organisations, including the Department of Transport (DoT), the Road Safety Authority, the National Transport Authority (NTA), Revenue, and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). The Hub is designed to simplify the process of accessing transportation-related information from a single, accessible source.

Passenger and Freight Volumes

Licensing statistics refer to the number of vehicles legally allowed to drive on Irish roads.

The number of vehicles licensed are presented on the hub.

'Private Vehicles' licenced increased from 2,432,648 vehicles in 2024 to 2,511,627 vehicles in 2025. While the annual increase in 'Total Vehicles' licenced increased from 3,143,356 vehicles to 3,246,651 vehicles over the same period. See Table TTA03

In 2025, the volume of goods transported by road was 169.1 million tonnes, an increase of 2.4% on the 165.2 million tonnes transported by road in 2024. See Table 4.1 and TFA01

CSO’s Transport Statistics Hub provides the detailed information on passenger and freight volumes.
