In general, while the recorded crime rate or the number of crime incidents per 100,000 people was highest in the Dublin Metropolitan Region for 2021, the rate of detection was lower for a number of crime groups. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

The recorded crime rate is the number of recorded crime incidents relative to the population, expressed as a rate per 100,000 people. Figures are based on 2021 population estimates for each region.

The level of Robbery and Theft crimes in Dublin far exceeds all other regions

The higher level of crime in the Dublin Metropolitan region was particularly true in respect of some crime groups. The crime rate in the Dublin Metropolitan Region for Robbery, Extortion & Hijacking offences was 82 instances per 100,000 people which was a rate about five times higher than the other regions and more than twice the State figure. Outside of Dublin, the highest rate for this category was in the Eastern Region, at 17 per 100,000 people. The Southern Region, at 39%, had the highest rate of detection for this crime group while the lowest was for the North Western Region at 20%. The rate for the Dublin Metropolitan Region was 23%. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

The crime rate for Theft & Related offences in the Dublin Metropolitan Region, at 1,798 per 100,000 people, was around three times higher than in each of the other regions. Outside Dublin, the highest rate for Theft & Related offences was in the Southern region at 655 per 10,000 people. However, the Dublin Metropolitan Region had the lowest rate of detection at 29% compared to the highest at 40% for the Southern Region. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

Burglary crimes far more prevalent in Dublin than in other regions

The recorded crime rate for Burglary and Related offences in the Dublin Metropolitan Region was 256 incidents per 100,000 people. This was twice as high as that for the North Western and Southern Regions and one and half times as many as the Eastern Region. The rates for Damage to Property and to the Environment (548 per 100,000) and Offences against Government Justice Procedures & Organisation of Crime (411 per 100,000) were also significantly higher in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.

The detection rate in respect of Burglary & Related offences for Dublin was 18% compared to 28% for the Southern Region. Furthermore, Dublin had the lowest detection rate for both Theft & Related offences (29%) and Damage to Property & the Environment offences (20%).  See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

While the recorded crime rate for Homicide offences was the same at one incident per 100,000 for all Garda Regions in 2021, the same was not true for the rate of crime detection. The rate of detection was highest for the North Western Region at 90%, followed by the Eastern Region (80%), the Dublin Metropolitan region (75%) and the Southern Region (60%). See Table 3.1.

The recorded crime rate for Ireland for Sexual offences in 2021 was 70 incidents per 100,000 people and was highest in the Dublin Metropolitan Region (76 per 100,000 people). The detection rate for Sexual offences reported in 2021 was also highest in the Dublin Metropolitan Region (15%) and lowest in the North Western Region (7%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.
