The number of recorded crime incidents increased across all regions for nearly half of all crime categories in 2022. However, some of the more significant rates of change were in Theft, Burglary, Assaults and Robbery offences. Data for 2021 is likely to have been impacted by public health restrictions in place at the time due to COVID-19. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

Theft and Related offences increased substantially across all regions with the highest percentage increase being for the Eastern and Southern regions (both at +46%) and lowest for the North Western region (+34%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

Recorded incidents of Attempts/Threats to Murder, Assaults, Harassments & Related offences showed the highest percentage increase in the Southern region (+23%) while the lowest increase was for the Dublin Metropolitan region (+11%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

The Southern (+65%) and Eastern (+53%) regions showed the highest increase in Robbery, Extortion and Hijacking offences while there was just a 5% increase in the Dublin Metropolitan region.

Burglary and Related offences increased by the most in the Dublin Metropolitan and Eastern regions (+13% for both) while the lowest rate of increase was in the North Western region (+3%).

By contrast, the number of recorded incidents of Fraud, Deception & Related offences were down across all Garda regions. The Eastern region had the largest fall (-40%) while the lowest was in the Dublin Metropolitan region (-24%). In 2022, the number of incidents of Controlled Drug offences fell in three out of the four regions with the largest fall in the North Western region (-24%). There was no change for this category in the Eastern region. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

The number of recorded incidents of Homicide and Related offences remained unchanged over the year in the North Western region but increased in the other three regions. The largest percentage increase was in the Eastern region (+92%) which went from 12 incidents in 2021 to 23 in 2022. Recorded crime incidents in this category increased by 17% in both the Dublin Metropolitan and Southern regions. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

An Garda Síochána are currently in the process of the rolling out of a new Operation Model. This will involve a fundamental change to the organisational structure from the existing District Based Model to a new Divisional Functional Area Model. Further updates will follow in due course.
