Thefts, Burglaries, Assaults and Robberies increase across all Garda regions while Drug offences fall in the year to Q3 2022

The number of recorded crime incidents increased across all regions for over half of all crime categories in the year to Q3 2022. However, some of the more significant rates of change were in Theft, Burglary, Assaults and Robbery offences. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

Theft and Related offences increased substantially across all regions with the highest percentage increase being for the Southern region (+43%) and lowest for the North Western region (+32%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

Incidents of Attempts/Threats to Murder, Assaults, Harassments & Related offences showed the highest percentage increase in the Southern region (+28%) while the lowest increase was for the Dublin Metropolitan region (+15%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

Burglary and Related offences increased by the most in the North Western region (+30%) while the lowest rate of increase was in the Dublin Metropolitan region (+13%).

The Southern (+69%) and Eastern (+51%) regions showed the highest increase in Robbery, Extortion and Hijacking offences while there was just a 3% increase in the Dublin Metropolitan region.

By contrast, the number of incidents of Controlled Drug Offences were down across all Garda regions. The North Western region had the largest fall (-28%) while the lowest was in the Eastern region (-9%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

In the year to Q3 2022, Homicide and Related offences increased in all but the North Western region (-10%) with the largest percentage increase being for the Eastern region (+25%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

An Garda Síochána are currently in the process of the rolling out of a new Operation Model. This will involve a fundamental change to the organisational structure from the existing District Based Model to a new Divisional Functional Area Model. Further updates will follow in due course.
