Fraud Crime Statistics

The CSO in December 2024 and March 2025 provided updates to users on the impact on Fraud crime statistics of the backlog in the recording of potential fraud related crime incidents reported to An Garda Síochána (AGS) by Financial Institutions under Section 19 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2011 on the PULSE system.

The CSO is advised by AGS that it continues to work on the backlog of Section 19 referrals from Financial Institutions and is making progress on this issue. In addition, work is ongoing by AGS to extend an existing reporting portal to handle Section 19 referrals. This system will improve the consistency and efficiency of the reporting process for Financial Institutions.

In view of this ongoing work, the CSO will continue to publish statistics on recorded crime incidents of Fraud, Deception & Related offences based only on those directly reported to AGS by members of the public and recorded on the Garda PULSE system. The CSO will continue to exclude incidents of Fraud that have arisen from Section 19 referrals until this data can be coherently included in official crime statistics.

Therefore, users should continue to exercise caution in the interpretation of published statistics on recorded crime incidents of this offence type.

Table 4.1 provides further breakdown by offence group of the total number of recorded crime incidents for the years to Quarter 2 (Q2) 2025 and Q2 2026.

There were 21,595 recorded crime incidents of Speeding in the year to Q2 2026 which was an increase of 16% or 3,040 incidents from the same period in 2025. These include crime incidents resulting from when persons detected of Speeding do not comply with the original Fixed Charge Notice issued for this offence. The increase in incidents of Speeding accounted for most of the increase (+11%) in crime incidents of Dangerous or Negligent Acts over the period.

Across other offence groups, the following are of note when comparing the year to Q2 2026 with the year to Q2 2025:

  • Most of the fall of 578 (-6%) in the number of incidents of Burglary & Related offences was accounted for by a fall of 538 incidents of burglary without aggravation.
  • The number of crime incidents of Theft from Shop increased by 1,962 or 6% to 35,534 incidents and those involving Theft from Person fell by 9% to 3,028 incidents.
  • Crime incidents of possession of drugs either for sale or supply (+19%) or for personal use (+5%) accounted for most of the increase of 8% or 1,328 incidents in those of Controlled Drugs offences (See Table 4.1, and PxStat Tables CJQ01 & CJQ07).
