Crimes incidents of Homicides, Assaults, Thefts, Robberies and Damage to Property increase across all Garda regions while Fraud offences fall in the year to Q1 2023

The number of recorded crime incidents increased across all regions for five out of the fourteen crime categories in the year to Q1 2023. Among these, the more significant rates of change were in Theft, Homicide and Robbery crimes. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

Theft and Related offences increased substantially across all regions with the highest percentage increase being for the Southern (+43%) and Eastern (42%) regions. The rate of increase was 33% for each of the Dublin Metropolitan and North-Western regions. See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

The overall number of recorded incidents of Homicide and Related offences increased by 28% over the year to Q1 2023 when compared to a year earlier. The largest percentage increase was in the Eastern region (+43%) followed by the Dublin Metropolitan region (+29%), the Southern region (+27%) and the North-Western region (+9%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

The Southern region (+55%) showed the highest rate of increase in Robbery, Extortion and Hijacking offences. This was about twice the rate of each of the North-Western (+28%) and Eastern (+27%) regions while there was just a 9% increase in the Dublin Metropolitan region.

Recorded crime incidents of Attempts/Threats to Murder, Assaults, Harassments & Related offences showed the highest percentage increases in the Eastern and Southern regions (both at +10%) while the lowest increase was for the North-Western region (+2%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

The number of recorded crime incidents of Damage to Property & to the Environment showed the highest percentage increases in the Dublin Metropolitan and Eastern regions (both at +14%) while the lowest increase was for the Southern region (+4%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

By contrast, the number of recorded incidents of Fraud, Deception & Related offences were down across all Garda regions. The Eastern region (-48%) and the North-Western (-47%) regions showed the largest falls while the lowest was in the Dublin Metropolitan region (-31%). See Figure 3.1 and Table 3.1.

An Garda Síochána are currently in the process of the rolling out of a new Operation Model. This will involve a fundamental change to the organisational structure from the existing District Based Model to a new Divisional Functional Area Model. Further updates will follow in due course.
