Gas Imports represented 75% of total metered supply in July 2024 with Indigenous Production from the Corrib gas field and biomethane plants accounting for the remaining 25% (See Tables 1A, 1B, 1C, and Figure 1).
Indigenous Production was 81% higher in July 2024 compared with July 2023 (See Table 1B and Figure 1). The Corrib gas field was closed for maintenance for some of July 2023 (See Table 3B).
Total metered gas demand in July 2024 was 3,912 gigawatt hours (GWh), which was 3% higher than the July 2023 figure of 3,794 GWh (See Table 2A).
Comparing July 2024 with July 2023, natural gas demand by customer category showed the following trends: Daily Metered (+12%); Non-Daily Metered (+4%); Power Plants (+3%); and Large Daily Metered (-3%) (See Tables 2B to 2E).
Natural Gas Imports were 1% lower in the first seven months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. Indigenous Production was 6% lower in the first seven months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023 (See Tables A, 1B, 1C, and Figure 1).
This release includes information on the maximum daily air temperatures at Dublin Airport (See Table 5) and daily mean wind speed at Dublin Airport (See Table 6). Low maximum daily air temperatures in winter usually increases the demand for household heating. The amount of wind can influence the balance between electricity generated from natural gas and wind turbines. Gas customer types are categorised based on their annual consumption. See the Background Notes for the full definition of gas customer types.
Indigenous Production was 6.5% lower in the first seven months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. Natural Gas Imports were 0.9% lower in the first seven months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023 (See Tables A, 1B, 1C, and Figure 1). Gas demand by Power Plants was 9.3% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of August 2023-July 2024 with August 2022-July 2023 (See Table A, 2B, and Figure 2).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (01 October 2024) published Networked Gas Daily Supply and Demand July 2024.
Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: “Total metered gas demand in July 2024 was 3,912 gigawatt hours (GWh), which was 3% higher than the July 2023 figure of 3,794 GWh (See Table 2A).
In July 2024, Power Plants accounted for 74% of total gas demand while Non-Daily Metered represented 8% of total gas demand, the same as July 2023 (See Tables 2A, 2B, 2C, and Figure 2). Non-Daily Metered customers have an annual consumption of less than 5.55 GWh, households and small businesses would typically fall into this category (See Editor’s Note below).
Natural Gas Imports were 10% lower in July 2024 compared with July 2023. Indigenous Gas Production was 81% higher in July 2024 compared with July 2023 (See Tables 1B, 1C, and Figure 1).
Total networked gas supply in July 2024 was 3,912 gigawatt hours (GWh). The July supply figure was 6% higher than the June 2024 figure of 3,697 GWh (See Table 1A).
Networked gas demand for July 2024 was lowest on 03 July 2024 with daily demand of 93 GWh and was highest on 23 July 2024 with daily demand of 143 GWh (See Table 4A).
Weather-Related Data
In July 2024, there were 11 days with a maximum daily air temperature above 20 degrees Celsius recorded at Dublin Airport, while July 2023 had seven days (See Table 5).
There were seven days in July 2024 with a daily mean wind speed of above 10 Knots recorded at Dublin Airport compared with 12 days in July 2023 (See Table 6). Higher wind speeds typically reduce the demand for gas by power plants because a higher proportion of metered electricity is wind generated.
In July 2024, the two days with the lowest daily gas demand by Power Plants occurred on the 03 July and 04 July. In July 2024, the two days with highest daily mean wind speed recorded at Dublin Airport were on the 03 July and 04 July (See Tables 4B and 6)."
