CSO statistical release, , 11am

Distance to Transport Services by Nature of Occupancy

Nature of Occupancy refers to the tenure status of the dwelling, indicating whether it is owned or rented. See Background Notes for further information.

At State level, median distances to ‘All Public Transport Stops’ (bus, rail, LUAS) varied modestly by housing tenure. Individuals living in 'Owner occupied without loan or mortgage' accommodation and those 'Occupied free of rent' had the highest median distances (0.8 km), while those living in 'Rented from a local authority', 'Rented from a voluntary body', and 'Rented from private landlord' accommodation had the lowest median distances (0.4 km). For ‘All High Frequency Stops’, individuals who 'Occupied free of rent' had the highest median distance (1.8 km), compared with 0.4-0.5 km among those in rented accommodation. These differences were more pronounced when looking at the 25% of individuals who lived farthest (upper quartile). One in four individuals who ‘Occupied free of rent’ lived over 6.8 km from ‘All High Frequency Stops’.

Distance to Transport Services by Nature of Occupancy and County

Access to 'All High Frequency Stops' varied by tenure across Counties. The largest differences in median distance by tenure were observed in Co. Roscommon, where median distances ranged from 1.2 km for those who ‘Rented from a local authority’ to 7.8 km for those in 'Owner occupied without loan or mortgage' accommodation. Notable differences in median distance to 'All High Frequency Stops' across tenure categories were also evident in Co. Monaghan, with median distances ranging from 1.0 km to 5.6 km. In contrast, tenure-related differences were smallest in Co. Dublin, where median distances ranged from 0.2 km to 0.3 km across all tenure groups. Across most Counties, households in rented accommodation were located closer to 'All High Frequency Stops' than those in 'Owner occupied without loan or mortgage', 'Owner occupied with loan or mortgage' or 'Occupied free of rent' accommodation.
