Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to systems that use technologies such as text mining, machine learning, or deep learning to gather or use data to predict, recommend or make decisions, with varying levels of autonomy. Examples of AI include chatbots, facial recognition, and autonomous robots.
In 2023, 8% of enterprises indicated that they used AI technologies in some capacity. Use of AI for automating workflows or assisting in decision making (4%) was the most common AI technology used among businesses in Ireland followed by machine learning (3%) and AI based software for data mining (3%). Language generation and speech recognition was used by 2% of businesses while 1% used AI for image recognition or processing and for enabling physical movement of machines via autonomous decisions.
More than one-third (37%) of large enterprises used AI technology, compared with 18% of medium and 5% of small sized enterprises. Use of AI for automating workflows or assisting in decision making was the most common AI technology used among each of the three sectors.
In 2023, 3% of enterprises used AI for marketing or sales, 2% used AI for accounting or financial management; R&D or innovation; business administration; ICT services; or production processes, while 1% of enterprises used AI for logistics.
