The data used in this statistical release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as Autodiesel and Unleaded Petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes and exceptional weather can cause variations in the trends of excise clearances of home heating oils between years. Changes in the vehicle fleet fuel type composition can affect the mix in clearances of road fuels. See the Background Notes for the full definition of fuel excise clearances.
There was a 6.9% decrease in Autodiesel excise clearances when comparing the year-to-date period January-March 2025 with January-March 2024. Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (09 May 2025) published Fuel Excise Clearances March 2025.
Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: "Autodiesel clearances fell by 7% in the first three months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. They were 4% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of April 2024-March 2025 with April 2023-March 2024 (See Tables A and 1A). Clearances are the duty paid on the quantity of oil removed from bonded warehouses and provide a proxy for sales (See Editor’s Note below).
Excise clearances of Unleaded Petrol in March 2025 were 93 million litres. This was the highest volume of Unleaded Petrol clearances recorded for the month of March since 2017 (See Table 1B).
Unleaded Petrol clearances were 1% higher in the first three months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. They were up 4% when comparing the 12-month rolling period of April 2024-March 2025 with April 2023-March 2024 (See Tables A and 1B).
Marked Gas Oil clearances were 5% higher in the first three months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024 (See Tables A and 1C). Marked Gas Oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings.
Kerosene clearances fell by 10% in the first three months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024 (See Tables A and 1D). Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.”
