Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (05 October 2026) published Fuel Excise Clearances July 2026. Clearances are the duty paid on the quantity of oil removed from bonded warehouses and provide a proxy for sales (See Editor’s Note below).

Commenting on the release, Dr. Robert Stapleton, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: "Unleaded Petrol clearances were 7% higher in the 12-month rolling period of August 2025 to July 2026 compared with August 2024 to July 2025. There were 108 million litres in Unleaded Petrol clearances for July 2026, the highest monthly volume of Unleaded Petrol clearances in more than nine years.

Autodiesel clearances have decreased by 1% in the first seven months of 2026 compared with 2025 and 2% when comparing the 12-month rolling period of August 2025 to July 2026 with August 2024 to July 2025.

Marked Gas Oil has experienced little change when comparing the 12-month rolling period of August 2025 to July 2026 with August 2024 to July 2025. However, Marked Gas Oil clearances of 114 million litres for July 2026 were the highest volume of Marked Gas Oil clearances for the month of July since 2007.

Kerosene clearances decreased by 8% in January to July 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. This equates to a reduction of more than 40 million litres. However, Kerosene clearances for July 2026 were the highest volume of Kerosene clearances for the month of July since 2009. Kerosene is mainly used as home-heating fuel."

Editor's Note

An annual Fuel Excise Clearances PxStat Table has been added to this statistical release, see FPA01.

The data used in this release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as Autodiesel and Unleaded Petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes and exceptional weather can cause variations in the trends of excise clearances of home heating oils between years. Changes in the vehicle fleet fuel type composition can affect the mix in clearances of road fuels. See the Background Notes for the full definition of fuel excise clearances.

Excise Clearances Percentage Changes for Selected Fuels July 2026

Unleaded Petrol clearances were 74 million litres higher in the 12-month  rolling period of August 2025 to July 2026 compared with August 2024 to July 2025, an increase of 6.8%. Autodiesel clearances decreased by 2% over the same period with Marked Gas Oil clearances more or less unchanged. Kerosene clearances decreased by 3.8% when comparing the 12-month rolling period of August 2025 to July 2026 with August 2024 to July 2025 and by 8.2% in January to July 2026 compared with the same period 2025. This equates to more than 40 million fewer litres in Kerosene clearances in the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025 (See Table A).
