In January 2025, Unleaded Petrol excise clearances, at 81 million litres, were 1% less than the January 2024 figure of 82 million litres (See Table 1B).
Excise clearances of Marked Gas Oil in January 2025, at 88 million litres, were down 5% when compared with the January 2024 figure of 93 million litres (See Table 1C).
Kerosene excise clearances were 113 million litres in January 2025, 15% lower than the January 2024 figure of 133 million litres (See Table 1D).
The data used in this statistical release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as Autodiesel and Unleaded Petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes and exceptional weather can cause variations in the trends of excise clearances of home heating oils between years. Changes in the vehicle fleet fuel type composition can affect the mix in clearances of road fuels. See the Background Notes for the full definition of fuel excise clearances.
There was a 15.1% decrease in Kerosene excise clearances when comparing January 2025 with January 2024. There was a 4.7% increase in Unleaded Petrol excise clearances when comparing the 12-month rolling period of February 2024-January 2025 with February 2023-January 2024 (See Tables A, 1B, and 1D).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (13 March 2025) published Fuel Excise Clearances January 2025.
Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: "The four fuels, Autodiesel, Unleaded Petrol, Marked Gas Oil, and Kerosene all had lower clearance volumes in January 2025 when compared with January 2024 (See Tables 1A to 1D).
Autodiesel clearances were 8.8% lower when comparing January 2025 with January 2024. They were 2.5% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of February 2024-January 2025 with February 2023-January 2024 (See Tables A and 1A). Clearances are the duty paid on the quantity of oil removed from bonded warehouses and provide a proxy for sales (See Editor’s Note below).
Unleaded Petrol clearances were 1.1% less when comparing January 2025 with January 2024. They were 4.7% higher when comparing the 12-month rolling period of February 2024-January 2025 with February 2023-January 2024 (See Tables A and 1B).
Marked Gas Oil clearances were 2.2% greater when comparing the 12-month rolling period of February 2024-January 2025 with February 2023-January 2024 (See Tables A and 1C). Marked Gas Oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings.
Kerosene clearances reduced by 1.7% when comparing the 12-month rolling period of February 2024-January 2025 with February 2023-January 2024 (See Tables A and 1D). Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.”
