The Mid-West was the most export orientated region with an export intensity of 85.6% in 2017

  • Of the Irish geographical regions, the Mid-West, Dublin and the West all had an overall export intensity of 80% or higher for 2017.
  • The Border and Mid-East regions had the lowest overall export intensity for 2017 at 59.9% and 63.6% respectively. 
  • Dublin, the Mid-West, the West and the Midlands were the only regions which showed an increase in export intensity between 2015 and 2017.
  • In contrast, the South-West had a decrease in export intensity over the same period. See Figure 5.1 and Table 5.1.

 The Mid-West was the region most reliant on exports in 2017 

  • The Mid-West was the region most reliant on exports in 2017, with 40% of enterprises either reliant (export intensity 50%<75%) or very reliant (75% and over) on exports for turnover.
  • The Border, Midlands and South-West regions were the least reliant on exports with around 30% of enterprises either reliant or very reliant on exports for turnover. See Figure 5.2 and Table 5.2.

 Export intensity for SMEs was highest for the South-West region in 2017

  • Amongst SMEs, the South-West and Mid-West regions had the highest export intensity values at 94.1% and 72.6% respectively.
  • The South-East region had the lowest export intensity for SMEs at 37.5%. See Figure 5.3 and Table 5.3.
  • Dublin had 4,557 exporting SMEs in 2017, the highest of any region.
  • The region with the lowest number of exporting SMEs in 2017 was the Midlands with 351.
