Information and communication sector had highest mean and median weekly earnings in 2018

Mean weekly earnings in all sectors of the economy stood at €740.72 in 2018.  The sector with the highest mean weekly earnings was the Information and communication sector at €1,244.13 in 2018 followed by the Financial, insurance and real estate sector at €1,091.92. The Accommodation and food services sector recorded the lowest mean earnings at €347.64.

In 2018 public sector mean weekly earnings were €930.03 while the private sector equivalent was €687.57.

Median weekly earnings in the public sector stood at €844.23 in 2018 an increase of 1.6% from €831 in 2017. In 2018, median weekly earnings for males and females in the public sector were €937.94 and €792.87 respectively. 

Private sector median weekly earnings were €523.25 in 2018, an increase of 3.6% from €505.06 in 2017, with males recording a median of €606.39 in 2018 and females €428. See table 4.1 to 4.3 and Fig 4.1

Median weekly earnings increased 2.9% from €575.75 in 2017 to €592.60 in 2018. The Information and communication sector recorded the highest total median weekly earnings in 2018 at €991.18 where median earnings were €1,101.17 for males and €815.78 for females.  The Public administration and defence sector had the next highest median weekly earnings at €841.54. The lowest total median earnings were in the Accommodation and food services sector at €313.59. See Table 4.3

Table 4.5 below presents annual percentage change in median weekly earnings for employees in continuous employment i.e. where the employee is in the same employment for both years being analysed e.g. for 2011-2012 only employments that existed in both 2011 and 2012 were included for analysis, if an employment existed in 2011 but not 2012, or vice-versa, then it was excluded from being analysed.

Median weekly earnings were highest in enterprises with 1,000 or more employees at €775.29 in 2018, an increase of 2.4% from €757.48 in 2017, with median male earnings at €864.84 and females at €729.31 in 2018. See Table 4.7 and Figure 4.2

Enterprises with 500 - 999 employees recorded the highest mean weekly earnings at €912.73 in 2018 with males recording a mean of €1,045.72 and females a mean of €767.62. Enterprises with 1-9 employees had the lowest mean earnings at €483.10 with males earning a mean of €574.20 and females €384.77. See Table 4.6
