Go to release: Vehicles licensed for the first time February 2021
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (08 March 2021) published Vehicle Licensing figures for February 2021. These figures are based on the National Vehicle and Driver File compiled by the Department of Transport.
Today’s publication shows that the number of new cars licensed for the first time in February 2021 was 11,672 compared with 13,263 in February 2020, a fall of 12.0% or 1,591 less cars.
Commenting on the data, Noreen Dorgan, Assistant Principal, said: “Today’s figures from the CSO show the continued growth in the number of electric and hybrid vehicles licensed in Ireland. Despite the drop of 15.6% in the overall number of new cars licensed in the first two months of 2021, the number of new hybrid and electric cars licensed in that period accounted for 31.9% of all new cars licensed. The number of new electric cars licensed from January to February 2021 grew by 28.9% from 1,018 to 1,309. New Plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) cars licensed more than doubled (+120.9%) in the first two months of 2021 compared with the same period in 2020 (1,542 compared to 698).”
Further commenting on the results, Noreen Dorgan, said: “The number of used cars licensed in the first two months of 2021 rose slightly by 0.2% (35 vehicles) compared with the same period in 2020. Furthermore, the number of used (imported) diesel private cars licensed fell by 10.9% from 9,999 in the first two months of 2020 to 8,906 in the same period of 2021.”
