Ireland's Trade in Goods 2020

Ireland exported €162 billion worth of goods in 2020 and imported €87 billion
  • Our biggest export market was the USA, with €50 billion of exports
  • Ireland exported €37 billion more to the USA than we imported
  • The UK was the biggest partner for goods imports, with a value of €20 billion
  • Ireland exported more than €13 billion of food and drink products in 2020 and imported €9 billion
  • Among the €9 billion of food and drink products imported in 2020 were 75,000 tonnes of potatoes, 79,000 tonnes of fish and shellfish, 61 million litres of mineral water and 111 million litres of wine
  • Ireland exported €4.8 billion of food and drink products to the UK in 2020 and imported €4.3 billion such products

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (13 December 2021) published Ireland’s Trade in Goods 2020.

This publication analyses Ireland’s goods exports and imports for 2020. It shows our biggest trading partners and products, with additional analysis on Ireland’s trade in food and drink.

 

Commenting on the figures, Statistician Ciarán Counihan said: “Ireland’s export trade was valued at €162 billion in 2020, while there were €87 billion of goods imported. The USA was Ireland’s biggest export market, with €50 billion of goods exported in 2020, while the UK was our largest import partner, with imports of €20 billion.

Ireland exported €13 billion of food and drink products in 2020. These exports included 283,000 tonnes of cheese, 301,000 tonnes of butter, 45,000 tonnes of mushrooms and 444 million litres of beer. There was €4.8 billion of Ireland’s food and drink products exported to the UK.

There were imports of €9 billion of food and drink products in 2020, which included 75,000 tonnes of potatoes, 79,000 tonnes of fish and shellfish, 61 million litres of mineral water and 111 million litres of wine. There was €4.3 billion of food and drink products imported from the UK.”
