Number of Persons in Employment

 

  • There was an annual increase in employment of 1.7% or 31,600 in the year to the second quarter of 2014, bringing total employment to 1,901,600.

  • On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment increased by 4,300 (+0.2%) in the quarter. This follows on from a seasonally adjusted increase in employment of 1,200 (+0.1%) in Q1 2014.

 

Number of Persons Unemployed

 

  • The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 12.0% to 11.5% over the quarter.
  • Unemployment decreased by 46,200 (-15.4%) in the year to Q2 2014 bringing the total number of persons unemployed to 254,500.
  • The long-term unemployment rate decreased from 8.1% to 6.8% over the year to Q2 2014. Long-term unemployment accounted for 57.6% of total unemployment in Q2 2014 compared with 58.2% a year earlier and 61.8% in the second quarter of 2012.

 

Labour Force

 

  • The total number of persons in the labour force in the second quarter of 2014 was 2,156,100, representing a decrease of 14,500 (-0.7%) over the year. The number of persons not in the labour force in Q2 2014 was 1,437,700, an increase of 22,100 (+1.6%) over the year.
