Births, Deaths and Marriages in Quarter 3 2010


The CSO today released the Vital Statistics Third Quarter 2010 report.


Some of the key points highlighted in the report are as follows:


Births

  • There were 19,171 births registered in quarter 3 of 2010. The corresponding total for quarter 3 2009 was 118 higher at 19,289 births, while the quarter 3 2005 total was 3,001 lower at 16,170 births. The quarter 3 2010 total is 30.5% higher than in 2001 when 14,688 babies were registered.
  • The 19,171 births represent an annual birth rate of 17.2 per 1,000 of the population, 0.1 below quarter 3 of 2009 and 1.6 above quarter 3 of 2005. This rate is 1.9 per 1,000 of population higher than in 2001. In quarter 3 of 2010, Meath recorded the highest birth rate of 23.2 per 1,000 of population, while Limerick City recorded the lowest birth rate of 11.0 per 1,000 of population.
  • Of the 19,171 births, there were 6,481 births registered as outside marriage. This accounted for 33.8% of all births, an increase of 1.4% on quarter 3 2009 and an increase of 2.3% on quarter 3 2005. Of these, 3,515 births were to unmarried parents with the same address, 18.3% of all births. The highest percentage of births outside marriage was in Limerick City at 58%, while the lowest percentage of births outside marriage was in both Dun Laoghaire Rathdown and Galway County at 25%.
  • A total of 7,815 births (41.0%) were to first time mothers in quarter 3 of 2010. Second time mothers had 6,392 births (33.5%). First births in the third quarter of 2009 and 2005 accounted for 42.6% and 40.7% of all births respectively.
  • The average age of mothers for births registered in quarter 3 2010 was 31.4 years, 0.2 years more than the corresponding figure in quarter 3 2009, 0.5 years more than in quarter 3 2005, and 1.1 years more than in quarter 3 2001. The average age of mothers having their first child in quarter 3 2010 was 29.4 years.


Deaths

 

  • There were 6,517 deaths registered in quarter 3 of 2010, a decrease of 1.8% in the number of deaths registered in the third quarter of 2009. The quarter 3 2010 total represents a death rate of 5.8 per 1,000 of population, a slight decrease from the rate of 6.0 per 1,000 of population in the corresponding quarter in 2009. The death rate in quarter 3 of 2001 was 7.3 per 1,000 of population.
  • For those aged 65 and over, the annual death rate was 39.3 per 1,000 of population, 5,010 deaths. This compares with a rate of 40.7 per 1,000 of population for the corresponding quarter of 2009, a decline of 3.4%. The decrease in this rate since 2001 was 21.9%, when 50.3 deaths per 1,000 of population, was registered.
  • There were 71 infant deaths registered in quarter 3 2010 giving an infant mortality rate of 3.7 deaths per 1,000 live births. The corresponding rate in quarter 3 of 2009 was 4.1 per 1,000 live births and was 6.6 per 1,000 live births in quarter 3 of 2001. The number of neonatal deaths (deaths of infants at ages under 4 weeks) in quarter 3 of 2010 was 48, 2.5 deaths per 1,000 live births.
  • Of the 6,517 deaths, over one third (33.9%) were attributed to diseases of the heart and arteries (circulatory disease), while 31.2% were attributed to malignant cancers (neoplasms), 10.3% to lung (respiratory) diseases and 6.1% to external causes, including accidents, suicides and other external causes.
  • As usual, the leading cause of death in quarter 3 2010 varied widely by age group. Among young adults aged 15 to 44, external causes of death including accidents, suicides and other external causes ranked highest. Among individuals aged 45-74 malignant cancers was the leading cause, while for those aged 75 and older it was diseases of the heart and arteries.


Natural Increase

  • The natural increase in the population (births minus deaths) for quarter 3 of 2010 was 12,654. This represents a rate of 11.3 per 1,000 of population, the same rate as quarter 3 of 2009 and 3.3 above quarter 3 of 2001 rate.


Marriages

  • There were 7,787 marriages registered in quarter 3 of 2010. This is traditionally the most popular quarter in which to marry. The number of marriages in the quarter represents a rate of 7.0 per 1,000 of population, 0.2 below the corresponding quarter of 2009. The quarter 3 2010 total is 3.0% higher than in quarter 3 2001 when 7,557 marriages were registered.
