Earnings and Labour Costs, Quarter 3 2008 to Quarter 3 2009 (All Sectors)

 

The results from the quarterly Earnings, Hours and Employment Costs Survey (EHECS) have been published today. The CSO wishes to thank the employers who are providing information for the survey.


The results show that:

  • Average weekly earnings fell from €696.72 in Q3 2008 to €691.27 in Q3 2009, a fall of 0.8%. In the private sector overall weekly earnings fell from €624.10 to €607.15 in Q3 2009, a decrease of 2.7% in the year. In the public sector earnings rose by 1.9% from €930.14 to €948.16 per week (this excludes the effect of the public sector pension levy).
  • Average weekly paid hours decreased by 0.9 hours per week, or 2.6%, from 32.9 hours to 32 hours from Q3 2008 to Q3 2009.
  • Average hourly earnings rose from €21.21 per hour in Q3 2008 to €21.60 in Q3 2009, a rise of 1.8%. Hourly earnings increased slightly by 0.6% in the private sector, from €18.84 per hour in Q3 2008 to €18.95 in Q3 2009. In the public sector, earnings rose from €29.10 in Q3 2008 to €29.74 per hour in Q3 2009, an increase of 2.2%.
  • Overall average hourly labour costs increased across all sectors by 2.1%, from €24.63 in Q3 2008 to €25.14 per hour in Q3 2009.
