Almost 3 in 5 births to mothers over 30

Almost 3 in 5 (59.2%) births registered in the 1st quarter of 2006 were to mothers aged 30 years and over. Over a quarter of births registered (25.1%) were to mothers aged 35 years and over.

These figures are contained in the Central Statistics Office's Vital Statistics First Quarter 2006 report.

Of women having their first child, 44% were aged 30 and over, while over 1 in 8 (13.6%) women having their first child were aged 35 and over. See Table 3 of report.

The oldest mothers were in Roscommon, with an average age of 32.6 years. The youngest mothers were in Limerick City, with an average age of 29.2 years. See Table 4 of report.

There were 15,958 births registered in quarter 1 2006, an increase of 624 on the quarter 1 2005 figure. This corresponds to a birth rate of 15.5 per 1,000 population.

Over two in five (41.1%) births were to first time mothers. Just over one-third of births (34.3%) were outside marriage. See Table 3 of report.

The report also shows that 7,320 deaths were registered in quarter 1 2006, 32 less than quarter 1 2005. This works out as a death rate of 7.1 per 1,000 population.

Over 4 in every 5 deaths were from either diseases of the circulatory system (36%), cancer (28%), or diseases of the respiratory system (17%). There were 2,665 deaths due to circulatory diseases (which include heart disease and stroke), 2,063 deaths due to cancer, and 1,208 deaths due to respiratory diseases. See Table 8 of report.

The natural increase (births minus deaths) for quarter 1 2006 was 8,638, which is 656 higher than in quarter 1 2005, and well over twice the natural increase of 3,745 recorded in quarter 1 1997.

There were 3,267 marriages registered in Quarter 1 2006, 358 more than in Quarter 1 2005.
