Environmental Accounts published today show that:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions in 2003 were 25% higher than the 1990 levels which is a decrease on the 2002 level of 29% above the 1990 Kyoto reference year.

* Includes both the Transport Sector and road transport activities carried out in all other sectors

In 2003 Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing was the highest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions at 29.4% (29.2% in 2002) of the total followed by Transport at 19.1% (18.2% in 2002) and Industry at 18.0% (20.8% in 2002).

  • Acid rain precursor emissions fell by 18.6% in the period 1996 to 2003.

This sixth set of accounts contain minor revisions to the previous publication, which gave details for 1995-2002.
