Information Note - Goods and Services Account

Goods and Services Account

The purpose of the Goods and Services account is to show, by product group and for the total economy, the supply of products and their uses. The account shows, at aggregate level, the matching of the supply and use of products in the economy. It is therefore related to the Supply and Use Tables which are published annually by the CSO.

The Goods and Services Account also shows the Resources (output and imports) and the Uses of goods and services (intermediate consumption, final consumption, capital formation, exports).

The Goods and Services Account can be represented in simple form as in the table below and in the companion chart. This table also includes the Annual National Accounts (ANA) item numbers and table locations to enable users to see how these items, as well as the ANA tables themselves, are interlinked. Taxes less Subsidies on products (D.21, D.31) which are shown explicitly in the Resources are included implicitly in the items in the Uses. The total Supply and total Use are also shown.

Another benefit of the Goods and Services account, in addition to being an initial part of the Sequence of Accounts and showing total Supply and Use, is that it displays different methods of calculating GDP as described in more detail in the accompanying Three methods to calculate Gross Domestic Product Information Note. For example, both the Output method and the Expenditure method are within the summary account above. In the expanded Goods and Services account below, the Income method is also included. The Output method items are highlighted in the darker colour as an example to illustrate that all three methods of calculating GDP can be found in this one table. ANA item and table numbers are again also included for reference.

Next steps

The Supply and Use Tables are published at a lag to the main aggregates in the National Accounts with the latest Supply and Use Table describing 2021. By producing an up-to-date Goods and Services Account we can show total Supply and total Use for the latest years consistent with the live National Accounts. This may be considered as a first step in an incremental process of more fully integrating the Supply and Use Tables into the Irish National Accounts.

The Goods and Services account is also the prequel to the Sequence of Accounts which forms part of the Institutional Sector Accounts which illustrate the detailed transactions and money flows in the economy.

The Goods and Services account has not previously been produced by the CSO, but it will be included in summary form in the forthcoming benchmark Annual National Accounts 2024 (ANA24), due for publication in the Summer of 2025.

Further details on the Supply and Use Tables and the Institutional Sector Accounts, which are published quarterly and annually, are available by clicking on the links.
