Almost 7% of micro enterprises appeared closed at the end of 2021

Among enterprises in the micro size class (2-9 persons engaged) in 2019, 6.8% appeared closed at the end of 2021. This was followed by small enterprises (10-49 persons engaged) at 2.7%, medium enterprises (50-249 persons engaged) at 1.8% and large enterprises (250+ persons engaged) at just 0.5%. See Figure 3.1 and Tables 3.1 & 3.2.

One in 8 micro enterprises from the 2019 population were at risk of closing  

Almost one in 8 (12.4%) micro enterprises in 2019 were at risk of closing at the end of 2021. This was followed by almost 4% of small enterprises, whereas less than 2% of both large enterprises (1.5%) and medium enterprises (1.9%) were in this category. See Figure 3.1 and Tables 3.1 & 3.2.

Among large enterprises from the 2019 population, 98% were still in business at the end of 2021

Among the 653 large enterprises in the 2019 population, 640 (98%) were still in business at the end of 2021. There were also over 9 in 10 medium enterprises at 96% and small enterprises at 94% which survived at the end of 2021. Micro enterprises had an 81% survival rate. See Figure 3.1 and Tables 3.1 & 3.2.

Almost 6% of jobs in micro enterprises in 2019 were with an enterprise that appeared closed at the end of 2021

In this report we analyse the 2019 enterprise population that had two or more persons engaged. This population accounted for 1.5 million persons in 2019. Of these persons, 2.2% or 33,626 were associated with enterprises that appeared to be closed at the end of 2021.  Micro enterprises (2-9 persons engaged) at 5.9% had the highest proportion of 2019 jobs in enterprises that appeared closed at the end of 2021, followed by small enterprises (10-49 persons engaged) at 2.4%, medium enterprises (50-249 persons engaged) at 1.7% and large enterprises (250+ persons engaged) at 0.5%. See Figure 3.2 and Tables 3.3 & 3.4.

Almost 10% of 2019 jobs in micro enterprises were in an enterprise at risk of closing at the end of 2021. This was followed by 3.5% of jobs in small enterprises and less than 2% in both medium enterprises (1.7%) and large enterprises (1.1%). See Figure 3.2 and Tables 3.3 & 3.4.

Over 95% of jobs in large and medium enterprises in 2019 were associated with enterprises that survived

Among large enterprises (250+ persons engaged) over 98% of persons engaged in 2019 were associated with an enterprise still in business at the end of 2021. Medium enterprises (50-249 persons engaged) still trading at the end of 2021 had almost 97% of its persons engaged from 2019, followed by small enterprises (10-49 persons engaged) at 94% and micro enterprises (2-9 persons engaged) at 84%. See Figure 3.2 and Tables 3.3 & 3.4.
