Total service exports increased by €18.2bn from €161.8bn in 2017 to €180.1bn in 2018. Total service imports decreased by €19.7bn from €205.3bn in 2017 to €185.6bn in 2018. The increase in service exports was principally due to increased computer service exports (+€18.1bn) while the decrease in service imports was predominantly due to decreased R&D service imports related to Intellectual Property (IP) (-€32.3bn). As a result, the services deficit moved from €43.5bn in 2017 to €5.6bn in 2018. UK, US, Germany and the Netherlands remain Ireland’s most significant trading partners.


Computer services exports at €86.2bn remains the largest export category and accounted for 47.9% of total service exports in 2018. Other business services imports, the residual import category, at €72.2bn, along with royalties/licences imports at €72.2bn, were the largest import categories. When combined, these two import categories accounted for 77.7% of total service imports in 2018 (see Table 1).

Service exports to Europe (€90.4bn) increased by €8.7bn between 2017 and 2018 due mainly to increased computer service exports (+€10bn). Service exports to the UK and Germany increased by €2bn and €2.1bn respectively, due to increased computer services (+€1.9bn and +€1.8bn). Similarly, service exports to France, Netherlands and Switzerland increased by €0.9bn, €0.9bn and €0.8bn respectively also due to increased computer services (+€0.9bn, +€1.1bn and +€0.7bn) (see Tables 2a & 2b).

Service exports to the US (€20.9bn) increased by €3.2bn in the same period, mainly in other business services (+€2.1bn) and in royalty exports (+€1.7bn). Service exports to China increased by €0.9bn.

Services imports from Europe (€73.5bn) increased by €7.8bn between 2017 and 2018 mainly due to increased other business services (+€3.7bn) and royalties imports (+€2.3bn). Imports from Netherlands, UK and Germany increased by €3.3bn, €2.7bn and €1bn respectively.


In the same period, service imports from offshore centres (€38.8bn) decreased by €21.8bn while imports from the US (€47.1bn) decreased by €0.3bn.

Background Notes

The International Trade in Services provides, on an annual basis, greater analysis of the service components and significantly more geographical detail, including a cross-classification of service components according to counterpart country/region. The data are collected and compiled within the BOP framework and as such are designed to comply in so far as possible with the stipulated international methodological standards. They also conform closely with international presentation formats taking materiality and relevance into account as well as data confidentiality constraints. The results published in this release are generally compatible with the information supplied to and published by Eurostat and the European Central Bank (ECB) concerning the economic activities of EU and EMU residents with non-residents of these areas. The figures are also compatible with those supplied to other international organisations such as IMF and OECD.
