Total service exports increased by €24.6bn from €135.1bn in 2016 to €159.7bn in 2017. Total service imports decreased by €20.8bn from €198.8bn in 2016 to €178.1bn in 2017. The increase in service exports was mainly due to increased Computer service exports (+€11.2bn) while the decrease in service imports was predominantly due to decreased Research and Development (R&D) service imports related to Intellectual Property (IP) (-€31bn). As a result, the service deficit moved from €63.7bn in 2016 to €18.4bn in 2017. UK, US, Germany and the Netherlands remain Ireland’s most significant trading partners. 

Computer services at €69.3bn remains the largest export category and accounted for 43% of total service exports in 2017. Other Business services, the residual import category at €72.9bn was the largest import category followed by Royalties/Licences at €66.6bn. When combined, these two import categories accounted for 78% of total service imports in 2017 (see Table 1).

Service exports to Europe (€82.8bn) increased by €8.7bn between 2016 and 2017 due mainly to increased computer service exports (+€3.4bn) and increased Other services n.e.s. (+€2.7bn). Service exports to the UK increased by €2.2bn, this increase was mainly in Financial services (+€0.7bn) and Other Business services (+€0.5bn). Service exports to Germany and Italy also increased by €0.9bn and €0.8bn respectively (see Tables 2a & 2b).

Service exports to the US increased by €3.9bn in the same period. The increase in exports to US was mainly in Other Business services (+€4.2bn) which was offset by a decrease in Royalties (-€1.5bn). Service exports to Japan increased by €1bn.

Services imports from Europe (€68.2bn) decreased by €13.9bn between 2016 and 2017 mainly due to decreased Other Business services (-€18.4bn) which was offset by an increase in Royalties (+€2.9bn).  While imports from Netherland, UK and Germany increased in the same period by €3.8bn, €1.7bn and €1.1bn respectively.

Service imports from the US decreased by €1.4bn between 2016 and 2017 due to decreased Other Business service imports (-€2.8bn) which were partially offset by increased Computer service imports (+€1bn).

Background Notes

The International Trade in Services provides, on an annual basis, greater analysis of the service components and significantly more geographical detail, including a cross-classification of service components according to counterpart country/region. The data are collected and compiled within the BOP framework and as such are designed to comply in so far as possible with the stipulated international methodological standards. They also conform closely with international presentation formats taking materiality and relevance into account as well as data confidentiality constraints. The results published in this release are generally compatible with the information supplied to and published by Eurostat and the European Central Bank (ECB) concerning the economic activities of EU and EMU residents with non-residents of these areas. The figures are also compatible with those supplied to other international organisations such as IMF and OECD.
