Wholesale electricity prices rose by more than 42% in the 12 months to June 2026

Key Findings

  • Wholesale electricity prices were 42.2% higher than June 2025 but fell by 6.2% in the month to June 2026.

  • All Energy Fuels were down by 9.0% in June 2026 compared with May 2026, but up 24.5% comparing June 2026 with June 2025.

  • Domestic producer prices for manufactured goods were on average 4.1% higher in June 2026 compared with June 2025, while producer prices for exported goods were up by 3.4%. Overall, manufacturing producer prices were 3.5% higher in 12 months to June 2026.

  • Producer prices for food products increased by 2.9% in the 12 months to June 2026, while the Food Products, Beverages & Tobacco Index was up by 2.4%.

  • Some of the most notable changes in producer prices for food products over the 12 months to June 2026 were: Fish & Fish Products (+8.6%) and Other Food Products (+5.4%).

  • The most noteworthy changes in other producer prices in the year to June 2026 were: Chemicals & Chemical Products (+11.9%), Other Non-Metallic Mineral Products (+5.9%), Fabricated Metal Products, except Machinery & Equipment (+5.7%), Pulp, Paper & Paper Products (+4.1%) and Basic Metals (+3.8%).

  • Wholesale prices for Construction Products remained unchanged in the month to June 2026 and rose by 3.1% in the 12 months since June 2025.

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (22 July 2026) published the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for June 2026.

Commenting on the release, Deirdre Toher, Statistician in the Prices Division, said:

“Wholesale price inflation showed a decrease in June 2026 with a 0.2% decline in the overall Producer Price Index for manufacturing industries in the month.

The price index for export sales was down by 0.2% since May 2026, while the index for domestic sales was up by 0.2% in the month.

Producer prices for products sold on the domestic market were 4.1% higher in June 2026 compared with June 2025. In the 12 months to June 2026, export producer prices rose by 3.4%, while overall producer prices were up by 3.5%.

Electricity, Energy Fuels and Food Prices

Wholesale electricity prices dropped by 6.2% in June 2026 when compared with May 2026 but were 42.2% higher than June 2025. They have fallen by 65.0% when compared with the peak that occurred in August 2022.

All Energy Fuels were down by 9.0% in the month, largely driven by decreases in Fuel Oil (-10.2%) and Gas Oil (other than autodiesel) (-8.2%). However, All Energy Fuels were up 24.5% since June 2025.

Producer prices for food products increased by 0.2% since May 2026 and rose by 2.9% in the year since June 2025. Some of the most notable changes in producer prices for food products over the 12 months to June 2026 were for Fish & Fish Products (+8.6%) and Other Food Products (+5.4%) (See Table 2).

Construction Products

The All Materials Index for Construction Products saw no change in June 2026 and rose by 3.1% in the 12 months since June 2025. The Building & Construction Index (i.e. Materials and Wages) was unchanged in the month and was 3.2% higher than June 2025 (See Tables 3 and 4).”

Wholesale prices for Construction Products increased by 3.1% over the 12 months to June 2026

Notable annual increases and decreases in Construction Products as shown in Table 3 include:

  • Bituminous Macadam, Asphalt & Bituminous Emulsions: (+14.9%)
  • Ready Mixed Mortar & Concrete: (+8.7%)
  • Copper Pipes & Fittings: (+8.7%)
  • Paints, Oils & Varnishes: (+8.4%)
  • Cement: (-5.3%)
  • Electrical Fittings: (-4.1%)

The Building & Construction Index (i.e. Materials and Wages) was unchanged in the month to June 2026 and was up by 3.2% in the 12 months to June 2026. This index combines the All Materials Index with a measure of the change of wages in the Construction sector to provide an overall index for input construction costs (See Table 4).

Wholesale electricity prices increased by 42.2% annually

There was a fall of 6.2% in the price of wholesale electricity in June 2026. The price of electricity was 42.2% higher than in June 2025 but was 65.0% lower when compared with the peak that occurred in August 2022.

The price index for All Energy Fuels fell by 9.0% in June 2026 but was up by 24.5% in the year since June 2025. This has been largely driven by increases in Fuel Oil (+32.0% in the year) and Gas Oil (other than autodiesel) (+24.7% in the year). 

The overall Energy Products Index has fallen by 7.0% since May 2026 but was 37.2% higher when compared with June 2025 (See Figure 3 and Table 5).
