Wholesale electricity prices decreased by almost 20% in the 12 months to January 2023

Key Findings

Wholesale electricity prices decreased by 41.4% since December 2022 and were 19.5% lower in January 2023 when compared with January 2022.
Domestic producer prices for manufactured goods were on average 8.2% higher in January 2023 compared with a year earlier, while producer prices for exported goods increased by 3.5%.
Producer prices for food products rose by 6.2% in the 12 months to January 2023, while the Food Products, Beverages & Tobacco index saw an increase of 6.1%.
Some of the most notable changes in producer prices for food products over the 12 months to January 2023 were: Dairy Products (+26.6%), Fruit & Vegetables (+19.1%), Fish & Fish Products (+17.1%) and Grain, Milling, Starches & Animal Feeds (+15.0%).
The most notable changes in other producer prices in the year were: Wood & Wood Products (+23.2%), Other Non-Metallic Mineral Products (such as glass, ceramics, cement, concrete and stone) (+18.4%), Beverages (+10.7%) and Furniture (+9.9%).
Wholesale prices for construction products increased by 0.6% in the month and by 15.5% in the 12 months since January 2022.

Statistician's Comment

Commenting on the release, Jillian Delaney, Statistician in the Prices Division, said: ''Electricity prices decreased by 41.4% in January 2023 and were 19.5% lower than in January 2022. The changes in electricity prices over the last two years can be seen in Figure 3. (See also Table 5.)

Producer prices in several food categories were significantly higher in January 2023 compared with the same month in 2022. Outputs from Irish manufacturers also increased in price in several other categories. (See Table 2.)

The overall producer price index for the manufacturing industries increased by 3.7% in the 12 months to January 2023. For manufactured products sold on the domestic market, the index was 8.2% higher than this time in 2022, while for products sold for export, the index increased by 3.5%. In the month, the price index for home sales was up 1.7%, while the index for export sales rose by 1.2%. Note that export producer price indices can be influenced by currency fluctuations. (See Tables 1 and 2 and Figures 1 and 2.)

The All Materials Index for construction products rose by 0.6% in the month and by 15.5% in the year. The Rough Timber (including plain sawn) category has seen large increases over the past two years. However, these prices have reduced in recent months and the index is now 18.1% lower than the same period in 2022. (See Table 3.)''

Wholesale prices for construction products increased by 15.5% over 12 months

Notable annual increases in construction products as shown in Table 3 include:

Structural Steel Fabricated Metal: 73.1%
Plaster: 41.0%
Plumbing Materials incl. Sanitary Ware: 30.6%
Ready Mixed Mortar & Concrete: 29.9%
Cement: 24.1%
PVC Pipes & Fittings: 20.7%

The Building and Construction Index (i.e. Materials and Wages) increased by 0.4% in the month and rose by 9.7% in the 12 months to January 2023. This index combines the All Materials Index with a measure of the change in wages in the construction sector to provide an overall index for input construction costs. (See Table 4.)

Wholesale electricity prices decreased by almost 20% annually

There was a decrease in the price of wholesale electricity in January 2023 with prices 41.4% lower than the previous month. The price of electricity was 19.5% lower than in January 2022. The overall Energy Products Index decreased by 36.7% since December 2022 and by 15.7% when compared with January 2022. (See Figure 3 and Table 5.)
