Services Exports and Imports with Ukraine

  • Ireland’s exports of services to Ukraine rose from €91m to €785m between 2017 and 2021, an increase of €694m, mainly due to increased computer services exports.
  • Ireland’s imports of services from Ukraine dropped from €19m to €11m between 2017 and 2021, a decrease of €8m.
  • Trade in services with Ukraine represented less than 1% of Ireland’s total trade in services in year 2021.

Value of Merchandise Trade

  • Ireland exported goods with a value of €60m to Ukraine in 2020 and €92m in 2021, which was just 0.05% of total exports from Ireland in 2021.
  • About three-quarters of all exports from Ireland to Ukraine were Chemical & related products in both 2020 (€47m) and 2020 (€71m).
  • Imports of goods to Ireland from Ukraine were €92.8m in 2020 and €70m in 2021, or 0.1% of total imports to Ireland in 2021.
  • Cereals & cereal preparations accounted for about 80% (€61m) of all imports from Ukraine in 2020 but this dropped to 52% (€37m) by 2021.

Resident Holdings of Foreign Portfolio Securities 

  • Irish resident holdings of foreign securities in Ukraine rose by 93% between 2018 and 2021, from €924m to €1,788m, mainly due to increased investments in bonds and notes.
  • This €1,788m investment in Ukraine in 2021 represented just under 1% of all investment by Irish residents in 2021. It was predominantly composed of debt securities – mainly bonds and notes.

These refer to the balance sheet stock of foreign financial assets held by Irish residents at the end of an annual calendar reference period. They form another subset of the International Investment Position or IIP data (in which they are broadly identified on the assets side of the IIP statement under the category portfolio investment). Portfolio investment is a type of investment involving the purchase or sale of equity securities and debt securities (in the form of bonds and notes and money market instruments). Bonds and notes are securities issued with an initial maturity of more than one year while money market instruments are securities issued with an initial maturity of one year or less.
