Exports of over €62 billion to the EU in 2021

Exports to the UK have been around 10% of total exports on a monthly basis over the past number of years. Exports to the EU as a share of total exports peaked at 45% in June 2020 but are generally between 35% and 40% of the total. Exports to the US are between 25% and 35% of total exports, with October 2021 reaching 38%.

The EU accounted for one-third of total imports in 2021

The EU had the largest share of goods imports for 2018 to 2020, peaking at 45% at the end of 2019. Imports from the UK as a share of the total peaked in October 2020, at 29% of the total, again pointing to the stockpiling of goods which occurred around that period and fell to 15% in January 2021. It increased later in 2021 to around 20% of the total share of imports.

Two-fifths of Ireland's exports of Food & Live Animals in 2021 went to the UK

The UK accounts for between €1 billion and €1.3 billion in exports of Food & Live Animals between 2019 and Q1 2022, which equates to between 35% and 45% of our total Food & Live Animals exports. The EU27 has the next highest share of our Food & Live Animals exports, ranging between 30% and 35% of the total.

Imports of Food & Live Animals from the UK fell by €800 million in 2021

The UK also has the largest share of our imports of Food & Live Animals, although the proportion of the share varies more than in exports. In 2019 and 2020, the share was between 45% and 50% of the total, but this has fallen since 2021 to around 40%. The EU27 share of imports of Food & Live Animals grew from 33% in Q1 2019 to 39% in Q1 2021, which is likely a knock-on effect of GB leaving the single market, and UK imports falling sharply.
