The number of bus journeys in January 2023 exceed pre-COVID-19 figures

Key Findings

  • The number of bus journeys in Dublin for the end of January (week beginning 23 January 2023) was 11% higher compared with the numbers of journeys in the same week in 2019.

  • The number of bus journeys outside Dublin also exceeded 2019 figures. The number of journeys in week 04 was 27% higher compared with the same week in 2019.

  • There were 18 fatalities on Irish roads in January 2023 compared with 14 in the same month in 2022.

  • The number of new cars licensed in January 2023 rose by 973 vehicles (6%) compared with January 2022.

  • Annual clearances of autodiesel for 2022, at around 3.6 billion litres, saw an increase of 6% on 2021 but a decrease of 2.5% on 2019.

  • Annual clearances of unleaded petrol for 2022, at 931 million litres, were 13% higher than in 2021 but 11% lower than in 2019.

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (17 February 2023) published its latest Transport Bulletin for February 2023. This bulletin captures changing traffic volumes and the number of journeys taken on public transport. This bulletin is compiled using data collected by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the Road Safety Authority, the National Transport Authority, Dublin City Council, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, and the Department of Transport.

Commenting on this latest bulletin, Dr Nele van der Wielen, Statistician in the Transport Division, said: “While in 2022 public transport volumes stayed below 2019 figures, latest data show that in January 2023 the number of Luas and bus journeys exceeded pre-pandemic figures. The number of bus journeys in Dublin for the end of January 2023 (week beginning 23 January 2023) was 11% higher compared with the numbers of journeys in the same week in 2019. 

Vehicles Licensed

There were 16,787 new private cars and 3,362 used (imported) private cars licensed in January 2023. Compared with January 2022, there was an increase of 6% for new private cars and a decrease of 9% for used private cars.

Road Fatalities

There were 18 fatalities on Irish roads in January 2023 compared with 14 in the same month in 2022 and in 2019."
