March 2025 Information Note on Fraud Crime Statistics

In December 2024, An Garda Síochána advised the CSO of a backlog in the recording of potential fraud related crime incidents reported by financial Institutions under Section 19 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2011 on the PULSE system.

This backlog, dating from Q3 2023 onwards, has meant that the Fraud, Deception & Related offences crime series pre and post Q3 2023 are no longer comparable. From Q3 2024, Recorded Crime contains a revised Fraud, Deception and Related Offences series for Q3 2023 onwards based only on fraud crime incidents reported directly to AGS by members of the public. Please see our accompanying Information Note for more details.

Table 4.1 provides further breakdown by offence type of the total number of recorded crime incidents for the full year 2024 compared with 2023.

There were 77 recorded incidents of Homicide & Related offences in 2024 and this was down 11 or 13% from 2023. Decreases in incidents of Dangerous Driving Leading to Death (-14 incidents or -28%) accounted for most of the change over the year.

Recorded crime incidents of Robbery, Extortion & Hijacking offences fell by 265 incidents or 10% over the year and this was driven mainly by a fall in incidents of Blackmail or Extortion offences (-211 incidents or -24%).

The increase of 182 incidents or 2% over the year in the number of recorded incidents of Burglary & Related offences was driven by an increase of 151 incidents or 2% in the number of incidents of Burglary where there was no aggravation.

Increases in incidents of Theft from Shop (+1,988 incidents or 6%) accounted for nearly eight out every ten (78%) of the overall increase of 2,547 or 3% in the number of incidents of Theft & Related offences in 2024 compared with 2023. Overall, in 2024, just over four in every ten (44%) incidents of Theft & Related offences related to theft from shops.

Decreases in the number of recorded incidents involving possession of drugs for sale or supply and for personal use accounted for most of the fall of 1,129 incidents or 7% in Controlled Drug offences in 2024. The number of incidents involving Possession of Drugs for Sale or Supply offences fell by 486 or 10% and incidents involving those for personal use fell by 778 or 7%.

Finally, an increase of 1,562 or 6% in incidents involving Disorderly Conduct offences accounted for virtually all of the increase of 1,546 or 5% in recorded crime incidents involving Public Order & Other Social Code offences.
