Journeys longer in duration in 2024

At an overall level, 78.6% of journeys were half an hour or less in 2024, down from 81.1% in 2021. However, journey times were longer in 2024. Over half (51.7%) of journeys took quarter of an hour or less, down from almost six in ten (57.6%) in 2024. This was particularly the case for Dubliners where 42.3% of journeys taken by people residing in the greater Dublin area took 15 minutes or less, down from 54.7% in 2021.

One in twelve (8.4%) journeys were greater than an hour in duration, almost double the prevalence in 2021 (4.8%) (See Figure 5.1 and Table 5.1).

Dublin residents’ journeys longer in distance and duration in 2024

Just over one in eleven (9.4%) of all journeys taken by people residing in Dublin were greater than an hour in duration, more than double the prevalence in 2021 (4.0%). Shorter journeys (15 minutes or less) for Dublin residents were down from 54.7% in 2021 to 42.3% in 2024 (See Figure 5.1 and Table 5.1).

In 2024, 33.4% of journeys taken by people residing in Dublin were 8 kilometres or more, up from 21.3% of journeys taken in 2021. Nearly half (46.2%) of all trips taken by people residing outside of Dublin were greater than 8 kilometres while less than one-fifth (18.0%) were short journeys (less than 2 kilometres), down from one in four (24.6%) in 2021 (See Figure 5.2 and Table 5.2).

Journeys taking longer in 2024

Over eight in ten (84.1%) journeys less than 2 kilometres long took a quarter of an hour or less compared with almost nine in ten (88.9%) in 2021, while one in eight (12.3%) took longer to complete (between 16 minutes and half an hour) up from almost one in ten (9.5%) of such journeys in 2021.

Just 3.6% of journeys less than 2 kilometres took more than half an hour. For long journeys of 8 kilometres or more, times taken for such journeys have almost returned to pre-COVID-19 levels. In 2019 (pre-COVID-19), 24.5% of such longer journeys took 15 minutes or less, while 33.5% were taking more than half an hour (See Figure 5.3 and Table 5.3).
