Survey purpose:

The National Travel Survey (NTS) is a household survey on the travel behaviour of respondents and provides detailed information on the domestic travel patterns of Irish residents.

The reference population is all individuals living in private households in Ireland. All usual residents of the household are included.

Survey Size:

In 2024, detailed information on travel was collected from 6,546 respondents.

Principal Variables:

Demographic variables such as sex, age group, and geographical location. Journey characteristics such as purpose of journey, main mode, and secondary modes of travel used, duration and distance, time of departure. Factors influencing use of public transport, active travel such as walking, cycling, EV ownership and usage. Road collisions, type and road safety.

Department of Transport (DoT), National Transport Authority (NTA), Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), third level students, researchers, and general public.
