Over three quarters (75.8%) of respondents aged 18 years and over stated that they held a current driving licence for a car. Six in every ten (60%) females aged 18 to 24 years do not hold a current driving licence for a car, compared with over half (50.6%) of males in this age group. For persons aged 75 years and over, nearly twice as many males as females hold a current driving licence for a car – 78.8% of males in this age group compared to 43.1% of females. See Table 7.1 and Figure 7.1.
18-24 years | 25-34 years | 35-44 years | 45-54 years | 55-64 years | 65-74 years | 75+ years | |

Licensed drivers were asked for the type of driving licence they possess. For those with a licence, Irish-issued full driving licence is held by 93.7% of persons aged 18 years and over, while 2.9% have Irish provisional licences. Foreign-issued driving licences are held by 3.6% of persons aged 18 years and over – 3% have full driving licences while 0.6% have provisional non-Irish issued driving licences. See Table 7.2.
Almost all respondents aged 55 years and over have a full Irish driving licence. One in eight (12%) females aged 18 to 34 years have an Irish provisional driving licence, as do 15.5% of males in this age group. See Tables 7.2 and 7.3.
