The MNE dominated sectors of the economy expanded by 6.2% overall in the second quarter of 2023. The MNE dominated Industry (excluding Construction) sector recorded an increase of 3.8% in Q2 compared with the previous quarter, while the Information & Communication sector grew by 2.0% in the quarter. The domestically facing Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sector increased by 10.3% quarter-on-quarter while the Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants sector expanded by 1.9% over the period compared with Q1 2023. Professional & Administrative services increased by 6.9% in Q2 while Finance & Insurance grew by 4.6% in the quarter. The domestically dominated Public Administration, Education & Health sector posted a modest increase of 0.4% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2023 while the Real Estate sector was broadly unchanged. Construction and the Arts & Entertainment sectors recorded declines of 2.2% and 0.9% respectively over the same period. (See Tables 2.5 and 6.3). Looking at half yearly results for 2023 compared with H1 2022, the MNE dominated sectors expanded by 0.8% over the six-month period while the Domestic-facing sectors grew by 4.5%. (See Table 6.2)

Comparisons with Q2 2022

Estimates for the second quarter of 2023 indicate that there was a fall of 0.7% in GDP in real terms in Q2 2023 compared with Q2 2022. Gross Value Added (GVA) for the MNE-dominated sectors expanded by 1.7% in Q2 2023 compared with Q2 2022. The Information & Communication sector increased by 6.8% in Q2 compared with the equivalent quarter of 2022 while the Industry (excluding Construction) sector increased by 0.8% year-on-year over the same period.

Of the domestic based economic sectors, Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sector posted a strong result, expanding by 13.7%, while Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants increased by 4.6% compared with the same quarter of 2022. Of the Service sectors, Financial & Insurance activities recorded the strongest growth rising by 14.1% in Q2 2023 compared with Q2 2022. Modest year-on-year increases were recorded in the Professional & Administrative Services sector (3.7%), Public Administration, Education & Health (2.2%) and in Real Estate activities (1.2%). The Arts & Entertainment sector contracted by 9.6% year-on-year in Q2 2023 with Construction activity falling by 4.3%. Overall, the domestic based sectors grew by 4.8% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023 compared with Q2 2022. (See Tables 2.3 and 6.2).

Looking at the H1 2023 results, the Information & Communication sector expanded by 8.4% in the six-month period compared with the equivalent period in 2022 while Financial & Insurance activities rose by 8.1%. Distribution, Transport, Hotels & Restaurants and the Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sectors both recorded increases of 7.6% over the period. Modest growth was posted in the other Service sectors. Public Administration, Education & Health grew by 2.9%, Real Estate activities increased by 2.0% half year-on-half year while the Professional & Administrative Services sector rose by 0.6% over the same period. Contractions were recorded in H1 2023 in Industry (1.2%), Arts & Entertainment (4.5%) and in Construction (0.2%)
