Excise clearances of Autodiesel in August 2024, at 280 million litres, were 14% lower than the August 2023 figure of 325 million litres. This was the lowest figure for August Autodiesel clearances since 2015 (See Table 1A).
Excise clearances of Unleaded Petrol in August 2024, at 89 million litres, were 8% lower than the August 2023 figure of 97 million litres (See Figure 1 and Table 1B).
Excise clearances of Marked Gas Oil in August 2024, at 97 million litres, were 8% lower compared with the August 2023 figure of 107 million litres (See Table 1C).
Excise clearances of Kerosene in August 2024, at 50 million litres, were 4% higher compared with the August 2023 figure of 48 million litres. This was the highest figure for August Kerosene clearances since 2017 (See Table 1C).
Comparing the year-to-date period January-August 2024 with January-August 2023, excise clearances by fuel category showed the following trends: Kerosene (+5.7%); Unleaded Petrol (+4.4%); Autodiesel (-2.3%); and Marked Gas Oil (+1.6%) (See Table A and Tables 1A to 1D).
The data used in this statistical release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as Autodiesel and Unleaded Petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes and exceptional weather can cause variations in the trends of excise clearances of home heating oils between years. Changes in the vehicle fleet fuel type composition can affect the mix in clearances of road fuels. See the Background Notes for the full definition of fuel excise clearances.
There was a 5.7% increase in Kerosene excise clearances when comparing the year-to-date period January-August 2024 with January-August 2023. There was a 4.3% increase in Unleaded Petrol excise clearances when comparing the 12-month rolling period of September 2023-August 2024 with September 2022-August 2023 (See Tables A, 1B, and 1D).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (11 October 2024) released Fuel Excise Clearances August 2024.
Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: "Autodiesel clearances were 2.3% lower in the first eight months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. They were 2.6% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of September 2023-August 2024 with September 2022-August 2023 (See Tables A and 1A). Clearances are the duty paid on the quantity of oil removed from bonded warehouses and provide a proxy for sales (See Editor’s Note below).
Unleaded petrol clearances were 4.4% higher in the first eight months of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. They were 4.3% higher when comparing the 12-month rolling period of September 2023-August 2024 with September 2022-August 2023 (See Tables A and 1B).
Excise clearances of Marked Gas Oil in August 2024 were 8% lower compared with August 2023 (See Table 1C). Marked Gas Oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings.
Excise clearances of Kerosene in August 2024 were 4% higher compared with August 2023 (See Table 1D). Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.
The monthly mean air temperature at Dublin Airport in August 2024 was 15.4 degrees Celsius, which was the same as the monthly mean air temperature at Dublin Airport in August 2023 (See Figure 4 and Table 4)."
